Joseph Sollis (on 2017 UDIA Professional Development Course)
Thanks to funding from PEF I attended the “Building the Development” module of the UDIA Professional Development Program. As a town planning graduate, the module provided me with a much greater understanding of how the outcomes of the planning phase are implemented. As a community development/engagement consultant who works in developing housing estates, it was interesting and useful to see these communities from the perspective of an engineer, landscape architect or developer and understand the myriad of factors that these professions need to consider. Overall, it helped me to see a more complete picture of the development industry and reinforced why all of us, in many different professions, need to avoid being stuck in our own bubbles and practise thinking holistically.

As a Development Analyst, I was very keen to broaden my understanding of urban development through project management and sought assistance from the Property Education Foundation (PEF) to assist me to attend the UDIA Professional Development Program focussed on Development and Project Management. This course provided an exceptional opportunity to gain critical knowledge of WA development and project management processes and platforms, as well as the opportunity to meet and network with key stakeholders in the industry. With PEF’s assistance, I was able to complete the course and further my education in property within a tailored course for WA. This has allowed me to continue to grow and further develop my role and career within the property industry and I am very appreciative to have had this opportunity.

PEF encourages and enables students to get involved in the property industry practice. It offers students various support through a variety of opportunities such as training, internships and networking events. During the preparation of 2017 national real estate competition, we received guidance and support from PEF Board members. I have benefited from attending diverse events such as Optus stadium tour, Residential market updates, building winning resume workshops. These events have expanded my horizon and enriched my experience, helping me be highly connected to the property industry and become more confident in my future career.
