Ryan Tucker

From the 8th of July until the 2nd of August I completed a 4-week work experience internship through the collaboration of CBRE, PEF and Curtin university. The time I spent was with the CBRE – Project management team headed by Jess Garner. On day one Jess welcomed me to the team and took the time to have a one on one discussion about what I was hoping to achieve and learn from my career in property and time at CBRE. Jess’s managements style impressed me and highlighted CBRE’s core beliefs of Respect Integrity Service and Excellence. I was then scheduled coffee appointments, and shadowing opportunities to work with and see how the project management teams’ key objectives are met.

Initially I was shown the framework involved; from preconstruction, construction and close out, the role the project management team plays from defining project scope, initial stages of planning, site meetings with head contractors and contractors right through to practical completion.

The majority of my time was shadowing Justin Millar, who was managing a number of projects at any one time being called on from all angles providing stability to the projects.

I methodically reviewed agreements for lease to ensure the developer was providing the right construction specifications required by the tenant. I attended initial site meetings or walk throughs and simulated tender submissions through the matrix designed by CBRE. Some of my time at CBRE was looking through and understanding bank guarantees and the tender process along with the process required for the successful head contractor. I sat through a call with one of the lessees to understand some common build issues that can arise.

Overall my time was well spent, and I gained a wealth of knowledge from such a short time. my highlight from the experience was a company breakfast headed by Lincoln Delahunt who has set a very high example of the manager I aspire to one day be, He incorporates a triple bottom line into the company’s corporate responsibility, he took the time to speak to all levels of the company from the directors to interns and everybody loves a free break fast .

Kind regards Ryan Tucker.
